Kelilla, Kinevra, Kryztalya, Kaelinda* wearing their Manaweave Robes
I’ve always loved stories about magic and wizards, so somehow Mage seems to “fit” the personality of every race that can take that class. I find Mages so much fun to play that in contrast to other classes, where having a Tauren or a Blood Elf (or both) of a class already satisfies my desire to play that class, I’m always happy to roll another Mage. Since most of these characters will probably not get very much more play time, having them all be Mages means that whenever I get the whim to take one of them out for a spin, I won’t have to spend much time re-learning my action bars, where all my spells are and what they all do. I can just say “I feel like being a Gnome today” and off I go. Some of these Mages are Frost, some of them are Fire, and I enjoy playing both specs. (I wish the upper tier talents in the Arcane tree looked a little more useful for leveling, as I’d like to try that spec out sometime, too). I’ve been trying to pretend to myself that I could still choose any class for my first Goblin and my first Worgen, but really, I’ve known all along that they won’t be anything but a Mage.
I’ve found myself thinking about rolling Mages of the races that will be newly allowed to choose that class in the post-Cataclysm world, as well. I’d like to play a Night Elf Mage, for the rather frivolous reason that my Night Elf Druid insists upon being Feral, but I only like the Night Elf cat & bear colors associated with white and blue-black hair, and I want to have a Night Elf with purple or green hair, and I haven’t had much luck with Priests so far. I’d like to play an Orc Mage, because the idea of playing an Orc Fire Mage who is actually a recovering Warlock amuses me. I’m not actually particularly excited about playing a Dwarf Mage, though, because while Dwarf women have an absolutely adorable casting animation, I’m more interested in playing a Dwarf Shaman**. But I might roll one anyway, later on in the expansion, just to have a complete set of Mages again.
*Blood Elf Mages get a short quest chain in Tranquilien that rewards them with Manaweave Robes identical to the Alliance version. They can also do the quest chain in Undercity that rewards the Lesser Spellfire Robes. Forsaken and Trolls, however, cannot get the quest for the Manaweave Robes in Tranquilien — when Kivrinne and Kiki were of an appropriate level to get it, I took them out to the Ghostlands, but it never showed up for them. I wondered if perhaps Draenei Mages would also get a unique robe quest at Blood Watch, but Kryztalya did not, and her trainers in the Exodar didn’t even send her to Stormwind to speak to Jennea Cannon. Since I already knew about the quest from Kelilla and Kinevra, I took Kryztalya to Stormwind to get herself some Mage robes anyway.
**I do love Shamans, too, and may very well end up with both a Mage and a Shaman of races that can choose both of those classes.
