When I go to look for a piece of gear to use in an RP set, I find it frustrating that resources such as WoWhead, Thottbot, WoW Model Viewer, and the Auction House sort items alphabetically and/or by level. Sometimes I find the style of garment I want right away, but the first item I find in that style isn’t the colors I want, so I have to keep looking at everything until I find the right style again, in colors that will work with whatever outfit I’m planning.
And while I’m searching, I end up with Dressing Room preview images that look like this:
(a deliberately silly outfit)
So I made a catalog of WoW gear sorted by style myself. I made one catalog for robes, the Azeroth Dress Catalog, and four Azeroth Tunic & Trousers Catalogs, one for each armor class. You can find my catalogs on the Kirina’s Closet “Everyday Wear” Forum, where they are stickied threads.
In each of my catalogs, I group items of armor by their style, showing or at least discussing as many color options of each style as I know about. My intent is for readers to be able to quickly find the style of garment they want, and also know what colors are available in that style, as an aid to assembling RP outfits.
In the Dress catalog, I mainly focused on robes available in Classic WoW, because I think all the LK robes are drab and uninteresting and I find most of the BC robes too busy to be really attractive. In the Tunic & Trousers catalogs, I again eschewed the drab and ugly LK gear, but this time I did include many BC items.
Recognizing that for most people anything that was a lower level quest reward (which by now includes BC quest rewards) was probably not something they have kept around, I’ve stuck mostly to green and occasionally blue quality gear that can be readily obtained by watching the Auction House, by farming appropriately leveled zones and dungeons, or by crafting. I have included the occasional quest reward item when I think it is entirely too attractive to not know about.
I don’t often use things like cloaks, helms, bracers, or gloves when I make RP outfits. When my model is a Tauren, I generally leave off the footwear, too. For belts, I usually use whatever I already have in my inventory that works reasonably well. I only really started using shoulderpads in my outfits when I’d acquired most of the heirloom shoulderpads. So if someone wants a style-sorted catalog of these types of Accessory items, they will have to make it themselves!
Thankyou for making these lists! I’ve wondered where people come up with their great looking RP outfits and had no idea where to start, but this looks super-useful, thanks 🙂
I absolutely LOVE your catalogs and pretty much everything you and Kirina have put together with the other forum contributers. I generally follow the same route, though for shoulders I keep every single set of raid shoulders I ever get. The last time I got rid of one I was pugging Gruul well into LK to get them again because they seemed to be the only shoulders that actually matched an outfit I had put together.
To find single pieces if I need something specific, WoW Model Viewer is my favorite resource, but I imagine you’re well aware of its uses already 🙂
Yes, Kamalia does a great job with her catalogs. I’ve even referred to them when trying to write up articles (for listings of other colors of the same style) ;D
