Raiding Rations

May 17, 2011 by kamaliaetalia

A Blog Azeroth Shared Topic from Amerence, who says:

[I’m] curious what you eat while playing the game in real life… I know there are times that we do munch something while playing an online game, So I like you to name Top 5 favorite food you like that suits your taste while gaming… and explain why?

Like many other people, BTH and I frequently eat pizza on raid night, but I don’t like to eat pizza on raid night more than once a week. The raid night on which I am not on-the-ball enough to have planned and prepared something else well in advance of pull time varies from week to week, though. Sometimes I am really lazy and we eat pizza on one raid night and leftovers on the other.

There isn’t any difference between our gaming and non-gaming munching preferences. I like to keep both salty and sweet snacks on hand at all times; our usual staples are chips and chocolate. We prefer corn chips to potato chips and almost always buy plain chips. Ever since we discovered Tostitos Blue Corn chips, we haven’t really bought anything else. To mix things up a bit, I buy nuts, trail mix, or crackers for our salty snacks about once a month. I usually have a bag of dark chocolate peanut M&Ms and a chocolate bar open by the computer. Alternative sweet snacks are dried fruit, yogurt, or ice-cream. The crackers are usually Vinta and the yogurt is usually strawberry. About every three or four months, I decide we should have some more healthy snacks for raid night and prepare crudites and fresh fruit.

After lots of experimenting with various grades and brands of chocolate over the past decade, I’ve found that I like my chocolate medium-dark: 50-65% cacao. My current favorites are the Lindt Excellence 50% bar and the dark chocolate Ritter Sport bars — plain, with mousse, with whole hazelnuts, with marzipan. I also like the milk chocolate Ritter Sport bars with whole hazelnuts and with butter biscuits. Every few months I go a bit darker with a 70% cacao bar.

I think I’m a bit addicted to chocolate. I find that I go through it more quickly when the raid is particularly stressful. I’ve tried once or twice to wean myself off wanting to have chocolate to hand while raiding, but then the raid has been tense and having no chocolate in the house to calm myself by munching on it has just compounded my agitation. Munching on other things — including the cheap chocolate chips I’ve tried to use as an “emergency chocolate reserve” — just isn’t quite the same. (On further reflection, it occurs to me that perhaps chocolate chips and other foods are less satisfying than a large chocolate bar because they do not afford the tactile stress relief of snapping the bar into smaller and smaller bits.)

I wanted to do this shared topic myself but I don’t really have “special” snacks on hand while gaming because I game so frequently xD We tend to get snacks for TV nights, or expansion release nights. Then we’ll go for nice crisps, chocolate, takeaway food, that kinda thing, but it does mean I don’t really have much to say on the subject sadly.

Oh and if you like dark chocolate, you should really really try Green and Black’s. Got myself hooked on their chocolate last year <33! I like their milk chocolate myself but they primarily do dark chocolate and it's fantastic.

I love Green & Blacks chocolate, both the milk and dark varieties. I just don’t buy it very often because it’s stocked in the natural foods sections of the grocery stores I frequent, and I don’t shop in those sections much.

that’s okay Jaedia and it doesn’t really have to be special the things you just mention here was just fine, I just thought out of curiosity what other gamers eat. and hey, i dont blame you if you play that much and can’t get a snack thats your choice, totally understandable. =) at least im glad your having fun playing the game you like. take care!

[…] Kamalia et alia shares the chocolate love, but seconds the pizza as a good raiding food. I suppose I just haven’t mastered the art of keeping the cheese off the keyboard. the violet scribe covers all of the bases from soda to chips to pizza rolls (a good alternative to messy slices!) and hints about a ‘Chocolate Bombs’ that I’m going to have to keep an eye out for.
