I did the Alliance version first. I hoped that the Horde version would make some more sense of some of Sylvanas’ actions. And yes, yes it very much did.
My absolute favorite thing about the whole experience, though, was what I observed when I took a thorough tour of the docks area before turning in the first quest. I don’t think it’s too terribly spoilery to write about this, as it’s not related to the big lore reveals and many folks may have missed it in their rush to get to and through the scenario itself.
I’ll put it behind a cut, though, just in case.
You guys, you guys! All those named NPCs in the dueling ring? All of those named people are Followers that can be recruited from the Garrison Inn! Many — though not quite all — of the other named NPCs scattered around the docks area doing different sorts of preparation and training with the recruits are also Inn-recruit Followers or NPCS associated with the various Garrison buildings. I absolutely love that Blizzard has done this with those characters, given them a life, as it were, beyond the Warlords Garrison!
In a tent at the Stormwind Docks, I found lore books about the history of the situation made available for characters to read. At first I didn’t stop to read through them, but then I changed my mind and went back and gave myself a quick lore review. The available books are:
Sargeras and the Betrayal
The Kaldorei and the Well of Eternity
The War of the Ancients
Kil’jaeden and the Shadow Pact
The Last Guardian
Archimonde’s Return and the Flight to Kalimdor
I looked and looked for a similar lore catch-up feature at the Dranosh’ar Blockade, and was disappointed that I didn’t find one.
Concerning the scenarios themselves (spoilers ahead) —
There is that enough of a spoiler buffer? I hope so.
The Horde scenario definitely filled in the gaps of the Alliance scenario. It’s a pity that Jaina and Genn don’t know what really happened there… Also, the Horde know a little bit more about the Alliance’s significant losses than the Alliance know about the Horde’s significant losses. Oh, the heartbreak!
My characters will pledge their loyalty to Sylvanas because they have to… but they don’t have to really like or completely trust her. She is… on probation, in a manner of speaking.
I hope Aggra gets to do some awesome stuff in the wake of all this. I rather like Aggra as a character. I loved how she showed up in Draenor-Nagrand and led the charge through Grommash’ar (instead of Thrall). I haven’t read anything about the Shaman Artifact quests (and please don’t spoil me), but I’m gonna be sad if Aggra doesn’t have a role to play in how I get the Doomhammer.
