We were first introduced to the big gunships as mobile bases in Icecrown: one for the Alliance, one for the Horde, endlessly circling and occasionally firing broadsides at each other. The gunships participated in the battle for Icecrown Citadel, getting into a skirmish with each other that ultimately resulted in the losing vessel shearing off before it could be completely destroyed.
The gunships returned in Cataclysm, making the improbable journey into Deepholm. The Alliance gunship survived. The Horde gunship crashed.
The Horde built another gunship; gunships from both factions participated in the battle against Deathwing at Wyrmrest Temple. Deathwing destroyed the Horde gunship (and its wreck can be seen lying on the ground in the End Time dungeon) and was pursued by the Alliance gunship.
The Horde built another gunship, and the vanguard took it to Pandaria, where it engaged an Alliance fleet off the coast of the Jade Forest. The Alliance’s air support succeeded in crippling the Horde gunship so badly that it crashed. Meanwhile, Alliance forces took their own gunship to another part of the Jade Forest, and their ship survived untouched.
Another Alliance gunship, however, was not so fortunate; it crashed into the flank of Shen-zin Su, the Wandering Isle.
The Horde built another gunship, and the Horde and the Alliance both took gunships to the Broken Shore. (highlight to read the spoiler text) The Alliance brought two gunships to the Broken Shore. In the pre-scenario cinematic, one of them crashes. In the post-scenario cinematic, the Alliance players are rescued by their other gunship. The Horde gunship, however, was lost; the two halves of a crashed Horde gunship can be seen during the phase of the Horde scenario which has “find Baine and Sylvanas” as its objective. (end spoiler text).
That makes, what, five gunships that the Horde has built, and four that they have lost? Compared to four gunships that the Alliance has built, and two that they have lost?
I think it’s time to stop making jokes about the Draenei crashing their ships…
