more musings about potential Allied Races alts

Looking over the latest details about Highmountain Tauren from the 7.3.5 PTR, I think I’m gonna need not just one, but three Highmountain Tauren characters. There are three tattoo/warpaint designs that can be in three colors, and the classes available to Highmountain Tauren cover three of the four armor types.

I’ve reserved the name “Kashina” for a Highmountain Tauren Druid. I decided that yes, those Highmountain Druid forms –particularly the Flight Form — are distinctive enough for me to want to have a Druid who uses them. I chose this name because the “ash” syllable recalls Ashamane and An’she — she will be primary spec Feral and secondary spec Balance with Glyph of Stars and Blessing of the Ancients — and because it’s like a softened form of “kachina“. Kashina will be a Skyhorn with green warpaint in the second design. She will probably have the fifth horn style, because I think that one is the most like the horn styles of the Druid forms. She will also probably have the carved pattern on her horns.

I’ve reserved the name “Kunaqiwa” for a Highmountain Tauren Warrior. This name has no special meaning; I flicked through the name randomizer until I found something I kind of liked, then played around with those syllables some more until I came up with something I liked better. Kunaqiwa will be a Bloodtotem with red warpaint in the first design. She will probably have the first horn style — the biggest, broadest, spikiest horns! Her horns will not be carved.

Rather than roll an entirely new character to be a mail-wearing Highmountain Tauren, I think I’ll just race-change mini-Kam. She’ll become a Rivermane with blue warpaint in the third design. She will probably have either the second or the third horn style — at the moment, I can’t decide which of those two small horn designs currently used by Highmountain Tauren women NPCs is the cutest — perhaps it will come down to which design shows the carved pattern option better. It might be prudent to wait on doing that race change until after I’ve already unlocked the Highmountain Tauren Heritage Armor by leveling Kashina or Kunaqiwa, though. Am I remembering correctly from the various Q&As and interviews that a character who has been race-changed to one of the Allied Races can still use the Heritage Armor for that race once a character of that race has earned it by leveling from 20 to 110?

I’ve reserved the name “Kaelyla” for a Void Elf Mage. “Kaelyla” was my Blood Elf Mage’s original name at creation. I changed that character’s name to “Kaelinda” when my Warlock’s succubus appeared with the name “Aelyla” — I didn’t want my Mage to have a practically identical name to my Warlock’s demon! For whatever reason — perhaps it’s the dark emo vibe of the Void Elves in general, perhaps it’s that I never use my Warlock’s succubus anyway — I am less bothered about using that name for my Void Elf… and, in fact, think it’s a great choice for a character who will essentially be Kaelinda’s “dark twin”.

For awhile, I thought about giving my Void Elf the “Kaylynda” name that my Human Mage has had for the past few years while she’s been fulfilling the role of Kaelinda’s Alliance doppelganger. I would then have reverted my Human Mage to her original appearance and name, Kinevra. Although I sometimes miss wide-eyed, freckle-faced, ash-blonde Kinevra, I also rather like having my Human Mage being a red-headed avatar of myself. So for now, I think I’ll keep my Human Mage as Kaylynda and just use the Barbershop to alter-ego her appearance to Kinevra for the occasional Transmogrification or RP purpose. I’ve reserved “Kinevra” just in case, though.

I’ve reserved the name “Koralithria” for a Nightborne Mage.

I’m sure that I will eventually want to have alts of all the Allied Races, even if they exist entirely to satisfy my Collector personality by existing and just sit at level 20 – 40 like most of the Minor Mages.

Although the intent of the Minor Mages was to be a “one of each race” collection, most of the Allied Races are so similar to existing races that I feel like having a Mage of both the “normal” version of that race and the Allied sub-race would be redundant*. Highmountain Tauren can’t be Mages anyway, so I think perhaps I want my alts of all the other non-Elven Allied Races to be something other than Mages, too.

I’ve reserved the name “Kilaueia” for a Zandalari Troll Elemental Shaman — “Kilauea”, the exact name of the Hawai’ian volcano, was already taken.

I’ve reserved the name “Kharlotta” for a Dark Iron Dwarf; class TBD but leaning toward Hunter or Warrior.

I’ve reserved the name “Krystaliza” for a Lightforged Draenei; class TBD but leaning toward Paladin.

Speaking of the Minor Mages… lately, whenever I see a player character of a race other than Blood Elf or Human in the Hall of the Guardian, I wish that my Minor Mage of that race was level 100+ and in the Hall of the Guardian, too — so that I could play high-level dress-up with her. Given that the buy-a-boost is only available through the in-game shop, it’s a good thing that I have it disabled. When the in-game shop was first introduced, I went into my account settings and used parental controls to disable it. I didn’t think I’d really be all that tempted to make impulse purchases of things like mounts or battle pets or even character customizations, but it seemed like a good idea anyway. And, for a long time, I wasn’t tempted by anything available from the in-game shop. But now… paying the kiddo’s nanny is eating up all of my paycheck, so I really don’t have the discretionary income to spend on boosting all of the Minor Mages…

* Yes, I am aware that it is totally self-contradictory and inconsistent to be perfectly fine with having redundant classes amongst my Tauren & Highmountain Tauren characters, and yet still think it too redundant and boring to have both a Bronzebeard Dwarf Mage and a Dark Iron Dwarf Mage, a Darkspear Troll Mage and a Zandalari Troll Mage, an Exodar Draenei Mage and a Lightforged Draenei Mage — Void Elves and Blood Elves aren’t as redundant because they are on opposite factions. I guess I love Tauren more than I love Mages?

can’t stay away for very long

Well, here I am at the Argent Tournament yet again.

This week’s discussion of mount collecting reminded me that I am still missing some of the Argent Tournament mounts. I decided that I should just go get them, even if I’m not terribly excited about them, so that I can tick them off the list of relatively easy mounts to obtain and get my mount barn that much closer to qualifying for the Jade Pandaren Kite. My characters who have already maximized their ability to earn Champion’s Seals declined to take up this tedious chore, saying they had better things to do with their time. Thus, the task has fallen to Kinevra, my only Alliance character who is high enough level to participate in the Tournament.

At least she can still get XP from it. Furthermore, after the various outfits I’ve made with the Sunreaver tabard, it will be fun finally have a character with the beautiful Silver Covenant tabard.

Meanwhile, my golden, azure, jade, and onyx cloud serpents have been feeling like their clutch is incomplete without a crimson cloud serpent. Because I haven’t been doing any dungeon running with the sort of regular, coherent group that could work on heroic dungeon achievements, I’m not going to be getting the regular crimson cloud serpent. Someone was going to have to farm Mogu in the Vale for Skyshards to bring down Alani and get the thundering crimson cloud serpent. A bit surprisingly, mini-Kam decided that she wanted to be the one to do it. Even more surprisingly, beating up the Mogu with an Enhancement Shaman is more fun than doing it with any of other characters who’ve previously done Golden Lotus rep.

This also meant that mini-Kam was going to have to start working on some Pandarian faction reps, specifically Order of the Cloud Serpents and August Celestials.

I will probably start doing the Shado-Pan with her, too, when the August Celestial dailies are at Niuzao. And it’s tempting to do the Tillers, as well, so that I can grow cabbages for the Shado-Pan and striped melons for the August Celestials…

alts in the mists

After my Warrior came home from the Dread Wastes wearing a quest reward set that was dark blue with purple accents, my Death Knight insisted that she must have this plate, too!

And lo, now I have five 90s.

Now Ketura is clamoring to get to 90. Being a Hunter, she always does each continent’s Nesingwary questline, so she’ll start there. After that, probably Kun-Lai Summit — and then the Isle of Giants!

She’s going to have to wait a little while longer, though, because I’m starting to feel a bit overwhelmed just by my other level 90 alts’ goals. I could make a handwritten list of all these objectives and show you a photograph of it, as the Godmother is so fond of doing — but I prefer to keep the list only in my head. In the past, when ideas for a particular hobby project have piled up enough that I’ve thought maybe I should actually write down the list of things I want to do so that I don’t forget anything, the very act of putting the list on paper has been enough to turn a fun project into a series of chores — and then the project never gets finished.

Anyhow, I’m going to make Ketura’s push to 90 wait until after Kregga has gotten her farm completely expanded. Kamalia made Best Friends with all ten of the Tillers, but the others are focusing on just four of them: Gina, for the mailbox; Tina, for the furniture; Old Hillpaw, for the Straw Hat; and Jogu, for the free crop predictions. Perhaps I will even drop Jogu, though. I haven’t been paying much attention to crop predictions recently, because I’ve been growing mostly specific vegetables for Work Orders (or other culinary needs) or special crops to supply my crafting professions.

Kamalia tends her farm every day, she runs LFR one or two nights a week, and then she’s done. She doesn’t really do dailies anymore; she stopped after she reached exalted with the Sunreavers for the second time. Of my level 90 alts, Katewatha and Kregga have various reputation-based goals for cosmetic or professional reasons. Only Keija the Warrior is interested in LFR or needs valor points enough to do the Battlefield:Barrens. Well, maybe Keija and Kregga will try to farm up the 500 Kor’kron Lumber for Griftah’s Amazing Troll Shoes — but if they don’t get it done before 5.4 drops, I won’t be too fussed.

My Druid, Kerisa, would also like to get to level 90 sometime before the next expansion. I am bound and determined to get some experience with Druid healing, though, so I intend to complete her journey to 90 in LFD. Alas, my struggles with mana management when I’ve run dungeons with my Mistweaver Monk have left me feeling rather reluctant to queue for LFD as a Tree….

Meanwhile, mini-Kam has been stubbornly ignoring The Art of War. I transferred her to a PvE server, and there are certain quest rewards in Pandaria that I would like to acquire for Transmogrification (stuff I wish Kam1.0 had kept), and she still doesn’t want to go to Pandaria. Yet. Instead, she spent some time in Gundrak trying to find a Gundrak Hatchling. Becoming bored of that pursuit after only a few sessions, she then headed back to Outland to finish farming up the aqua Elements recolor and the black Earthfury recolor sets. After that, she went to Northrend again, returning to the Argent Tournament to work on becoming exalted with the Sunreavers there — she wants the tabard for a Transmogrification kit. At this rate, she may not make it to Pandaria until after patch 6.0 drops!

changes for mini-Kam

As I’ve noted before, I leveled mini-Kam from 85 to 86 on cooking and fishing dailies. Then, using AH purchases to boost her ilevel as needed, I leveled her from 86 onward in LFD. Since the XP nerf went through, I’ve been chaining dungeons with her, running three to five in a sitting. Late last night, Kamaliya became my second 90 without ever having set foot in un-instanced, open-world Pandaria.

Yes, now I have two level 90 Tauren main-spec Resto Shaman.

I originally created mini-Kam to be my social contact with my guild on Lightninghoof before I transferred all my other Tauren characters to Bloodhoof in late Cataclysm. I did Tier 14 LFR with those guildies with Kamalia via the wonders of CRZ-grouping, however, and mini-Kam felt less needed. In late January, the guild lost both of its main tanks simultaneously, and it didn’t manage to recover. Furthermore, all the people whose company I liked so much when I first joined the guild have either moved to other guilds or stopped playing entirely by now.

Not too long ago, I decided that mini-Kam should also be the Shaman I’d use to experiment with the Enhancement specialization. I’ve very much enjoyed to not having to be always looking over my shoulder for Reavers, though, and the dailies areas on Bloodhoof are still busy enough with Horde and Alliance alike that I /cower at the thought of trying to do Pandaria dailies on a PvP server.

So, sometime soon, mini-Kam will be joining the Underpowered Death Knight on Thunderhorn. I’m contemplating bringing the rest of my Tauren class doubles over there, too.

When I went looking for items to use with the level 85 T11-recolor Dragonkiller Tunic, the teal tones of the agility versions of the level 70 Zul’Aman mail coordinated excellently. The copper tones of the belt and boots provide a nice burst of complementary color and also tie in the bindings of the bow.

One of the most exciting things about Patch 5.2 was the expansion of Transmogrification to allow all weapons that use the same animations to be cross-Transmogrified. I’ve long thought that the Glaive of the Pit coordinates with the Starry Robes of the Crescent very beautifully, but as a Balance Druid who will never legitimately equip a polearm because there are no +Int polearms, I couldn’t use this combination in a proper Transmogrification kit — until now!

So that’s what I did yesterday. I also went fishing with all of my alts currently in Pandaria, funneling their catches to my Monk, who is at the NEED MOAR CARPS stage of Sungshin Ironpaw‘s cooking training. But I didn’t go to the Isle of Thunder — I want to finish the Dominance Offensive storyline first, and at the rate I’ve been doing those dailies lately, it’ll probably be another few weeks before I do. I didn’t take over the farm — having finally capped out her 5.0 reps, Kam herself doesn’t need the work orders. And I didn’t even pick up a Mantid Sonic Locator to start digging up some new things — though I should do that sometime soon. The Transmogrifications were too exciting 😛

a fortunate midsummer

When she went to Shattrath at level 60, mini-Kam was severely disappointed that Old Man Barlo wouldn’t give her any fishing quests, even though her fishing skill was already well into Grand Master (Wrath) levels. By the time she reached level 70 and he would, Marcia Chase would also give her fishing quests. So she kept her hearth in Thunder Bluff until she could go to Dalaran, because the Kalimdor/EK and Dalaran fishing bags have the chance to award the Jeweled Fishing Pole, whereas the Shattrath ones do not. Because she had not gotten her fishing pole yet, she kept her hearth in Dalaran after she reached level 80. Presently, I realized that whereas the Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, and Undercity fishing dailies are mutually exclusive, the Old World, Shattrath, and Dalaran fishing dailies are not. So I started doing both the Dalaran and Orgrimmar fishing dailies.

On Monday, mini-Kam dinged 84 from doing the tour of the Midsummer bonfires, and she also got that Jeweled Fishing Pole from her Dalaran fishing bag.

… oh, no — oh no no mini-Kam, no! /facepalm

Then on Tuesday, Kamalia finally won the Timepiece of the Bronze Flight in her LFR run.

And today, mini-Kam became my fifth 85.

Sooo… now what? Well, faffing, most likely. I probably won’t bother with gearing Kamaliya up for LFR; she’ll want to be raid-ready in Mists, but she doesn’t need to be now. Instead of spending the money to gem, enchant, reforge, and Transmogrify multiple items as she moves up through the ilevels, I think I’d rather spend some time herbing and lay in a decent supply of cash to afford such things later. Besides which, Kam2.0 wants to farm Scholomance for the Sawbones Shirt and Bloodmail Legguards, and there’s Outland dungeons to be run for other Transmogrification set items.

stormcaller of the silver covenant or the blue flight

Upon reaching level 80…

…and becoming a Champion of Thunder Bluff…

…Kamaliya decided that it was time for a New Look.

She’d won the Skyshatter Shoulderpads (T6) during a recent Laid Back Loot Raid, so she decided to combine them with her Blue Dragonscale chestpiece and leggings to make a (mostly) blue and silver Transmogrification Template Kit. I’ve concluded that Doc’s Belt is THE best belt to use with this chestpiece and leggings because of its gold buckle. I’ve been wanting to use the Spellbreaker’s Buckler on some character, any character, for quite awhile now, and its colors do coordinate rather nicely with the rest of the pieces I wanted to use. (I’ll make a plate TTK to go with that shield when one or the other of my Paladins gets leveled up enough to acquire it.) I used the Devout Aurastone Hammer to Transmogrify her mace because I already had it and it looked decent. Because Kamaliya still has some more LFD leveling to do, she’s using the blue Phantasmal Headdress to Transmogrify the red Preened Tribal War Feathers; the gold accents on the headdress and the gold accents on the chestpiece, leggings, and belt complement each other nicely. The Sundered gloves & boots and Mylune’s Cloak of Cheerful Flowers complete the set.

It’s a little Silver Covenant…

…and a lottle Blue Dragonflight.

The Silvermoon War-Mace is the exact style match for the Spellbreaker’s Buckler and would heighten the association with the Silver Covenant. Kael’thas’ Cudgel of Consecration would be another good Silver Covenant weapon.

Malygos’s Ice Spire Scepter or the Starlight Dagger and the Mazthoril Honor Shield or the Lost Pavise of the Blue Flight would be great choices for playing up the association with the Blue Dragonflight.

Timeslicer would be an excellent weapon choice for either association of the set.

For Shaman who are already level 85, or not using Heirlooms, I like the look of the Ornate Circlet/Pillager’s Crown, the Storm Master’s Helmet, the Steamworker’s Goggles, and the Corroded Helmet.

the Shamadin Collection

The first time I saw the Emerald Shield over a year ago, I knew that I just had to use it with the Captain’s armor in an RP set for a Paladin someday. Then Transmogrification came along, and I realized that because the Captain’s armor is mail, if I wanted to use that concept in PvE, I’d have to do it with a Shaman. I therefore think of this ensemble as my “Shamadin” Transmogrification Template Kit.

Kamaliya (aka “mini-Kam”) has been wearing this outfit in LFD ever since she got leveled up enough to use all of the items in it. (Her full TTK also uses the green Tracker’s Headband to Transmogrify the red Preened Tribal War Feathers.) Although no-one has ever whispered Kamaliya about it, I’ve wondered if her random party members have ever been caught off-guard by her outfit when they first zone in and found themselves momentarily confused — “Hey wait just a second, is this healer a Shaman or a Paladin?”

Although the Emerald Shield is the key piece of my original concept, the Crystal Pulse Shield looks equally impressive with the Captain’s mail — especially with Light’s Justice as the coordinating weapon.

This completely golden set creates an even more Paladin-like appearance.

The Spare Part Leggings (H)/Irongoat Legguards (A) are the exact style match for the Dreamwalker Armor. The quests they are rewarded from are rather deep into the Stonetalon Mountains quest chain, however, so Kamaliya is content to re-use her Triumphant Legplates for the time being. If The WoW Factor ever comes to Lightninghoof, I might make the effort to go pick up the Spare Part Leggings to make the outfit just a little more polished for the competition!

Silver and gold together evoke memories of the distinctive Lawbringer Armor, though the brightness of these sets is more subdued.

I have re-used some items several times in Kamaliya’s versions of these outfits. This set of peripheral items coordinates well enough with all of the core chestpiece + leggings combinations, and I like gold, so I’m happy to save the inventory space.

I used the Seaspeaker Mantle with some items from the pink Bloodscale plate set as a Love is in the Air RP outfit for my Death Knight in 2011, but I had to come up with something different — something Transmogrification-friendly! — for Kregga to wear this year. Kregga will probably be DEing her Seaspeaker Mantle now that Kamaliya can wear this lovely ensemble:

Kamaliya doesn’t have any suitable weapons to match with this set yet, so here are some suggestions:

This outfit would look absolutely stunning with a Sawbones Shirt… oh bother, I’m going to have to go farm Scholomance again, aren’t I?

The last color of the Captain’s chestpiece style is the Dark Iron Mail. If you are so fortunate as to be able to find a Blacksmith who can craft it for you, you can make this dramatic black and white TTK.

Krom’gar Champion’s Chain Pauldrons (Horde-only) or Ornate Pauldrons, Dark Iron Mail, Bonelink belt, Bloodmail Legguards, Impenetrable gloves and boots, Formidable Cape

With a Tuxedo Shirt or Stylish Black Shirt, this ensemble would be appropriate for any elegant or formal occasion!

There is also one more color of the Dreamwalker Armor style, the Breastplate of the Terrible Price. This is the only variation of these two chestpiece styles that I think is completely unsuitable for a Shamadin; its gray-green coloration is too evocative of a Hunter stalking silently through the shadows of a forest (it would, however, be fine for an Enhancement Shaman). In the interest of providing TTKs for all of the colorations of this style, though, here are some outfits that make use of it.

rites of passage

Last night, mini-Kam dinged 77 in LFD.

Today, I took her up to the Argent Tournament and started her on the path to becoming “Kamaliya of Thunder Bluff”.

“[Subject Name Here] of [Subject Home Town Here]” is one of my favorite titles because it signifies that a character is loyal and proud of her heritage — plus, it’s one of the easiest titles in the game to acquire. I intend to have each of my characters become a Champion for her home city at the Argent Tournament when she arrives at the appropriate level to do so. I suppose that makes becoming a Champion at the Argent Tournament something of a rite of passage for my characters.

Going through the Dark Portal for the first time is another rite of passage, because the character is very obviously entering a new phase of life. Because one can level from 60 to 70 without absolutely needing to choose Aldor or Scryer anymore, I consider doing Khadgar’s “Crash Course in Shattrath History” quest and making that faction choice a rite of passage for my characters, too — and I do think carefully about which faction is most appropriate for each individual character. (Kaelinda has been feeling very conflicted about that choice. As a Sin’Dorei Mage, it seemed most natural and appropriate for her to choose Scryer. She’s so fascinated by the Draenei, however, that she’s been seriously considering switching to Aldor.)

Other rites of passage for my characters are acquiring Lunar Festival (and other holiday) finery and getting five professions skilled up enough to do the Darkmoon Faire profession quests. Doing these things means I’ve invested a certain amount of time and care into a character, and they make her less susceptible to sudden arbitrary deletion.

I love this term “faffing” that the Godmother uses. It’s so perfectly evocative doing a little bit of this, a little bit of that on a bunch of different characters. I think it’s my new favorite word for how I spend my time in-game!

…leveled mini-Kam to 70. My goal for the rest of the month of June is to get mini-Kam to 85.

…dinged my Tauren alt guild.

…gotten my Hunter to Exalted with Therazane and done the Zandalari, Elemental Bonds, and opening the Molten Front questlines with her. Now she needs to run some Heroics and rescue her Lashtail Hatchling before Mists comes along!

…found the last Common and Rare-Rare Archaeology artifacts with Kam — now all she has left are the last few Epic-Rares — the Sword What Don’t Exist, the Extinct Turtle Shell, the Staff of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan, the Staff of Ammunae, the Scimitar of the Sirocco, and the Scepter of Azj’Aqir.

…leveled an F2P minion Troll Druid to 10 on Lightninghoof, used it to make a raid so Kamalia could go to Karazhan, and scored the T4 glove token off of Curator to finally complete her 4pc T4 Transmogrification set (I’m using the T2/Onyxia hat with it).

…fished to 75 skill to be able to do the Darkmoon Faire fishing quest with eight (8) characters who either had very low Fishing or didn’t have Fishing at all.

…cooked to 75 skill to be able to do the Darkmoon Faire cooking quest with one character who had low Cooking.

…taken two characters who had no second Primary Profession yet and one character whose second Primary Profession needed to be changed and leveled their new second Primary Professions to 75 to do the Darkmoon Faire profession quests.

…done two Primary Profession and the Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid Darkmoon Faire profession dailies with twenty-four (24) characters.
