Amateur Azerothian, Effraeti, and Tome of the Ancient have teamed up to bring Mog Madness to the WoW blogosphere! There will be five rounds, and each round will have a different “Mog Build” prompt. For the second round, the Mog Build criteria are these: Hunter or Druid (using class-appropriate gear type), must incorporate Glaive of the Pit/Marrowstrike as the weapon.
As it so happens, just a few weeks ago, I took my caster Druid, Kerisa, on a guild fun run night that started in Magtheridon’s Lair, then continued to Ulduar. The Glaive of the Pit dropped from Magtheridon, and I won the greed roll for it. Looking at that beautiful blue and gold weapon made me sad that polearms will never, ever be itemized for casters, because it matched what Kerisa was already wearing so perfectly!
For the purposes of the contest, however, I decided to look into mail and let my Hunters, Ketura, Katelyra, and Kerithian, be my models.
Mixing blue and gold makes green, and, as it happens, there are a matching set of beautiful gold, green, and blue mail breastplate and leggings — the Netherstrike Breastplate and the Leggings of Beast Mastery.
Thunderbringer’s Guard, Pauldrons of the Promise, Netherstrike Breastplate, Dreadhawk’s Girdle, Leggings of Beast Mastery, Triumphant Gauntlets, Radiant Boots, Permafrost Cape, Glaive of the Pit
This is the second time I’ve wanted to make an outfit for Ketura using this combination of chestpiece and leggings. Unfortunately, the chestpiece is a Bind-on-Pickup crafted item. I’m beginning to think that perhaps I should drop Ketura’s Mining, level Leatherworking until she can craft the Netherstrike Breastplate, make it, and then drop Leatherworking and relevel Mining (her other profession is Engineering, and no way am I dropping and releveling that!).
Ketura is also extremely unlikely to ever visit Al’Akir in the Throne of the Four Winds, so if I ever make this outfit for her in-game, she will probably use the much easier to obtain Cloak of the Moon instead of the Permafrost Cape.
Suggested ranged weapons to use with this Transmogrification Template Kit:
Mark “S” Boomstick, Expedition Repeater, Moonbow
I have deliberately chosen simply-styled ranged weapons to not compete with the elaborate melee weapon and to keep the visual focus of the ensemble on the chestpiece and leggings when in combat.
As the Thunderbringer’s Guard is a Horde-only quest reward, I have used the neutral quest reward Princess Poobah’s Tiara for Kerithian.
Now I like that cape a heap more than the one I chose! And it looks so good with Anzu! And I never thought green would look good but it actually does with that polearm! Good luck with your entry Kamalia, I’ll be cheering you on!
Thanks, Navi!
It’s such a pity that such a gorgeous cape drops from Al’Akir. I hope we see an easier to obtain recolor of that design at some point in the future.
The Glaive of the Pit does look great with Anzu! 😛
I think the green really only works because I found pieces that use all three colors, blue and gold and green, together. The idea of using green might have worked with using some gold-and-green pieces and some gold-and-blue pieces, but I don’t think it would have worked very well to use solid green pieces.
Rock on, girl! You look AH-mAYzzzzing! And the magical part is the story of how you obtained the polearm. I am thinking of a Bear-style writing challenge called “How I got my favorite weapon” or something like that.
Thank you, Matty!
It was kind of fun to see the weapon criterion and think “hey, I already HAVE that weapon!” from a pure luck happenstance.
That would be a fun writing challenge — perhaps after Mog Madness is over?
I think I’ll try this one out on my hunter – here’s hoping I haven’t completed that quest for the blue shoulders yet, though. Very nice, and this is the first time I see that cloak-design, too!
😀 You should totally do it, and I want to see it when you’re done!
The nice thing about Cataclysm resetting all the level 1-60 quests and quest rewards is that it improves the chances that a high-level character can obtain low-level quest reward items for transmogrification use. Before Cataclysm, chances are that a low-level quest reward would be something you might not have even chosen when you did the quest while leveling, and even if you did choose it, you probably didn’t still have it around. (Of course, if this is a high-level toon leveled since Cataclysm started, you may have the same problem) But now, with all the quests reset, there’s a good chance that a high-level character hasn’t already done the quest that rewards some nifty looking piece of gear.
That is so true! I hadn’t realize they had reset /all/ of the 1-60 quests, though, I only thought they revamped some areas and added a bunch of new quests – so this is wonderful to hear, since you do have a bigger chance of actually getting that nifty gear indeed. Off to Mauradon then, it is!
There are a couple of BC item quest rewards I wish they would reset too
Love the use of colour in your outfit and creative screenshots. All the entries I’ve seen so far have been so varied which is great. Now we can relax and see what others come up with 🙂
TY! I can’t wait to see all of the entries for this round, too.
The Mark “S” Boomstick is one of my favorite mogging ranged weapons – it’s simple, but intimidating, and it’s very distinctive-looking. And its simple colors go with many outfit colors!
I love the rich blues and yellows in that first outfit! Very striking.
I really should make myself a Mark “S” Boomstick, because it is a great looking gun. I’m currently using the Tribute Gun because it matches the gun wielded by the TB Bluffwatchers on the Org-to-TB zeppelin, but I’m starting to think I could use a change.
Blue and gold is a color combination I really like, so it was fun to play around with it for this round’s challenge.
When I first saw the pole arm I thought it was going to be hard for people to make it look good, but you did!
Stunning assembly!
Thank you! It wasn’t as much of a challenge as I thought it might be, really — I have a whole ‘nother post of “also-rans” scheduled for Saturday, after the entry deadline and before the results.
It seems the Netherstrike Breastplate has been removed from the game ): I of course find this out after the epic legs drop and am two pieces away from completing this outfit.
Oh dear, it *does* seem like the LW recipe for the Netherstrike Breastplate has been removed from the game — it doesn’t have a source listed for it on WoWhead anymore. I’m pretty sure that my LW, who learned the recipe back in BC and made the Netherstrike Breastplate for herself not too long ago, still has the recipe, but that doesn’t help anyone else because the Netherstrike items themselves are BoP for the LW who makes them. 😦
Another breastplate I like with the Leggings of Beast Mastery is the Protector chestpiece. It’s close enough in color and style to harmonize reasonably well, but I’m not sure how well it would work with the rest of the items in this specific set. I think the Protector chestpiece + Leggings of Beast Mastery *would* work pretty well with the items I used in my other Netherstrike Breastplate + Leggings of Beast Mastery outfit — the Bog Epaulets and Talhide-Lined boots & gloves — and if you still used the Dreadhawk belt, it would probably still work pretty well with the Glaive of the Pit overall.
